Is You Me brings elegance to the fleeting, the virtuosic and the awkward
Is You Me is a highly inventive duet and the second collaboration for Canadian Benoît Lachambre and Louise Lecavalier – she is considered one of the icons of contemporary dance and former star of La la la Human Steps. Two amazing performers on an all white stage, in the midst of a kinetic, colorful and visually riotous series of video projections by Laurent Goldring and music by NY composer Hawn Rowe. Lines are drawn around and across the dancer’s bodies. Spaces are filled with color and imitate human forms, animals and objects. Is You Me is a unique collaboration in a startling visual feast.
Benoît Lachambre has been evolving in the international dance community for almost thirty years as choreographer, dancer, improviser and teacher. In 1996 he founded his company Par B.L.eux, devoted to contemporary and interdisciplinary choreographic creations. Lachambre has received the Jacqueline Lemieux award from the Canada Council (1999), two Dora Mavor Moores for best performance and best choreography for “Délire Défait” (2001), the Moving Pictures award in Toronto for the best performance in “Cantique no 1 et no 2” directed by Marie Chouinard (2003) and the Bessie Award for his performance in “Forgeries, Love and other matters” (2006).
Louise Lecavalier (CA) joined La La La Human Steps in 1981 and went on to perform in each of the company’s productions until Salt in 1999. She also participated in David Bowie’s Sound & Vision tour (1990), The Yellow Shark Concert by Frank Zappa and Ensemble Modern (1992). In 1999, Lecavalier was awarded the Jean A. Chalmers National Award, Canada’s most distinguished dance prize. Since 2003 she has collaborated with choreographer Tedd Robinson.
Laurent Goldring (FR) studied philosophy before turning to photography, video and media art. He has collaborated with performance artists including Xavier Le Roy, Jean-Michel Rabeux and Saskia Holbling as well as with Benoît Lachambre.
Hahn Rowe (USA) is a New York City violinist guitarist, composer, and record producer who works in the fields of rock, electronic music, improvisation and new music. He has collaborated with names like Moby, David Byrne, Antony and the Johnsons and R.E.M. and also composes electronic music for film and dance performances, including collaborations with choreographer Meg Stuart. Rowe has received 3 Bessie Awards for his work.
