an Accident / a Life

In the fraction of a second, a ballet dancer’s life was changed forever. Collaborating with an award winning choreographer, together they have created a remarkable piece of dance art.

In 2021, Marc Brew impressed with the success of ‘un-be-known’ at the CODA festival, which was praised by Norwegian critics and audiences. Now, one of the world’s leading disabled choreographers is back with a new groundbreaking work.

‘an Accident / a Life’ is created in collaboration with the Belgian star choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, who has won numerous prestigious awards. Today, he is regarded as one of the world’s most sought-after choreographers.

At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, when the possibility of physical performances was highly uncertain, Marc Brew and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui decided to develop work together. They shared a wealth of personal stories and got to know each other’s backgrounds before having the opportunity to work in the studio. ‘an Accident / a Life’ is the result of these personal conversations.

The performance, a solo piece, similar to Brew’s previous works ‘Remember When’ and ‘For Now I Am…’, draws on the Australian dancer, director, and choreographer’s personal history. In 1997, he was only 20 years old when he was involved in a car accident in South Africa while traveling with friends. The piece addresses the car accident that resulted in severe spinal cord injuries.

Together with Cherkaoui, Brew creates a theatrical universe where movement, sound, and visual elements blend into a story of survival, resilience, and rediscovery. A rare masterful encounter is set to take place at Bærum Kulturhus.
