La Zon-Mai is a multimedia installation created by choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and video artist Gilles Delmas. In the point of intersection between architecture, three-dimensional art and dance, this striking work is about identity, territory and boundaries.

La Zon-Mai is a house without doors and windows. The roof and walls serve as screens upon which film is projected. 21 outstanding dancers from different countries – all of whom have at some time been confronted with disruption and migration – are asked the question of what “home” means. They are simultaneously filmed in their own homes. Each individual dancer’s life experience finds expression through movement. The choreography collects their different views of the world and transmits an essence of human diversity. “Zon-Mai is a kind of reflection upon the world,” he says.

Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui is based in Belgium, where he runs his company, Eastman. He has won broad recognition for his artistic work and creates dance for some of the largest companies in the world. A recurring theme in his work is human identity.

Gilles Delmas is a cinematographer and artist, known for “Phoker Chomo”, Documentary, The factory (May 2012), “Les six saisons”, Documentary, essay, Lardux films (2012), “Héraclitus, the black Ship”, Documentary, Lardux films (2014) and « the ferryman » film essay (2015).
