Afro-fusion (October 10th – 12th)

With Freddy Milanya

Description: As the name suggests, Afro-fusion is a fusion of African dance styles. It’s not a distinct dance style but rather an open concept that allows the freedom to blend movements rooted in both modern and traditional African dance forms.

We will explore the rich cultural diversity of Africa, delving into a wide range of African music by incorporating movements and inspiration from various folk, modern, and street styles such as Ndombolo, Azonto, Konto, Pantsula, Afrohouse, and Amapiano, among others.

Freddy will guide you through engaging exercises, steps, and choreography, focusing on body isolation, footwork, fluid movements, and the infectious rhythms that define various African dance styles.

Join us in creating a space where cultural exchange and creative expression intertwine.

Schedule:

  • October 10th – 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM
  • October 11th – 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM
  • October 12th – 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM

Oona Doherty Company / Hilde I. Sandvold (October 13th)

Information about the workshop (requires registration):

The workshop will focus on the process and material from the performance “Navy Blue” by Oona Doherty, seen from the perspective of Hilde Ingeborg Sandvold, a freelance dance artist in the ensemble of “Navy Blue.”

We will start with “skill exercises” – basic work to warm you up and get you ready; we’ll check balance, mobility, and coordination through practical exercises and simple floor sequences.

Then, we will learn some set material and, finally, an improvised setup, both from “Navy Blue.” These materials will give us a chance to practice physical ability while preparing tools for performing with different forms of emotional/performative presence.

Hilde Ingeborg Sandvold is a dancer and choreographer. She has created commissioned works for Corpus at the Royal Theater and several solo works, including “Dans, for Satan,” selected for Aerowaves and Ice-hot 2018, as well as the full-length work “GRÅTT” (2021). As a dancer, she has collaborated with numerous choreographers across Europe. Currently, you can see her in Oona Doherty’s “Navy Blue,” touring North America and Europe.

The workshop is organized in collaboration between CODA and PRODA.

The workshop requires binding registration and has limited spaces. Price: NOK 125.

Time: 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM

Workshop with Ingrid Berger Myhre (October 16th & 17th)

The workshop does not require registration.

What do we see when we look at dance? If dance is a form of language, how does it express itself? In this workshop, we will move through various setups related to two things: dancing and observing. We will do this either collectively or in smaller groups, switching between moving, writing, observing, and dancing. Our activities may resemble more games than exercises. We will also find time to reflect together: Can a dance be anything? And what influences the way we ‘read’ these dances?

The workshop is organized in collaboration between PRODA and CODA.

Schedule:

  • October 16th – 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM
  • October 17th – 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM

Ingrid Berger Myhre premieres the work “Spelling Spectacle” at Dansens Hus from October 20th to 22nd. Read more and buy tickets here

In Process with Sebastian Tjørstad and Nasser Mhende (October 20th)

The workshop is developed based on the piece “Balance” by Nasser Mhende and Sebastian Tjørstad. These two dance artists have different bodies and physical starting points but come together to create a balanced movement language. The piece sheds light on the significance of balance in our surroundings and its impact on our quality of life. ‘Balance’ is about finding an equal platform for two individuals with different backgrounds where both have the opportunity to reach the same goal. How can we build a society that is equitable for everyone, regardless of physical or mental differences?

Mhende and Tjørstad have unique experience working from diverse physical bodies and cultural backgrounds. Mhende has studied modern dance in Zimbabwe and Norway, including training in coaching dancers with disabilities. Since 2012, Nasser has collaborated with Sebastian Tjørstad, who was born without arms and legs. Together, they have developed performances and workshops for children and youth and have undertaken several tours with DKS Viken.

Dance is a universal language, and contemporary performing arts should reflect the rest of society. Shouldn’t all types of people then be represented?

Overall, the workshop aims to contribute to a more diverse and inclusive dance art.
